Clean Air Day celebrations with new air quality resources and a Garden Party
On Thursday 18th June we celebrated Clean Air Day by bringing together our community for a Sustains Us Garden Party. We enjoyed an afternoon and evening of live music, food, activities and conversations focused on greener living and improving local air quality.
Launching new air quality resources
The Garden Party marked the launch of our new clean air resources for local residents and businesses. In recent months we have been working with Design Science to better understand our local air quality and what we can all do about it. Through our website you can now access:
- A map visualising live data from our air monitors across the neighbourhood
- Air quality advice for residents, businesses and community
- Local stories from our community on air pollution
- Where to go for further information on clean air paths and air pollution facts
Garden Party at Emma Cons Gardens
With cakes and nibbles provided by local businesses Eden Caterers and Konditor, a bar hosted by The Old Vic, and live music from Morley College Jazz Band and Coin Street Community Singers, the Garden Party offered plenty of opportunities to get involved. Activities included:
- Hands-on lunchtime gardening club at Emma Cons with Rooted Gardening Club
- Seedball planting workshop for Oasis Academy students with Bankside Open Spaces Trust
- Trees of Waterloo Guided Walk – a guided walk with Lambeth Council’s Tree Planting Programme Officer to explore some of the trees that help shape the area
- Free Dr Bike safety checks and repairs with XO Bikes
- Cycle Buddy Ride – a training session and led ride for those interested in becoming a Cycle Buddy and supporting Disabled cyclists with Wheels for Wellbeing.
- Chats with Swapfiets and OurBike - local organisations helping people travel more sustainably.
This was the first event of the Reimagining Emma Cons Gardens summer series – a community-led programme celebrating and reimagining this much-loved Waterloo green space ahead of its long-term transformation. The series continues through till the 17th September with weekly live performances, creative workshops, pop-up activities and installations.
