South Bank Flood Risk Roundtable: A Collaborative Step Towards Climate Resilience
This week, key stakeholders came together for the South Bank Flood Risk & Resilience Roundtable, an event focused on tackling flood risk from the River Thames and shaping a more resilient future for South Bank and Waterloo.
Hosted in partnership with the Environment Agency, the roundtable convened riverside landowners, operators, and local partners to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with flood resilience.
Understanding Future Flood Risk
Charlotte Wood, Sally Harvey, and Richard Penn from the Environment Agency provided insights into the Thames Estuary 2100 strategy, outlining the long-term risks posed by the River Thames and the steps needed to mitigate them. They highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping a Riverside Strategy by 2030, ensuring South Bank’s waterfront remains protected and sustainable for future generations.
Building a Shared Vision
Roundtable discussions centred on mapping existing flood defences, assessing their current condition and height, and exploring ways to enhance the iconic Queen’s Walk as part of a wider strategy. Participants considered how the area could be adapted to not only address flood risk but also improve public spaces.
A First Step Towards Collective Action
The event marked an important milestone in bringing together those with a shared responsibility for the South Bank’s flood defences. By working in partnership through South Bank and Waterloo Sustains Us, stakeholders can develop a cohesive approach to flood risk protection, ensuring that residents, businesses and local spaces are protected.
A huge thank you to all attendees for their contributions and commitment to this vital issue, and to the team at OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie for hosting, offering the perfect vantage point over the Thames, and providing a sustainable low-waste breakfast.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue this collaborative journey towards a climate-resilient South Bank.
