Hercules Road’s green transformation is now complete

News   |   Jun 2025

We are thrilled to announce that our partners WeAreWaterloo Business Improvement District, together with Lambeth Council and South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours (SoWN) have completed the transformation of Hercules Road into a greener, more climate-resilient space.

The initiative has converted a grey road into vibrant green spaces for residents, workers and passerby to enjoy. It also includes the addition of new cycle parking and increased seating.

Over a dozen new trees planted will enhance the neighbourhood’s greenery and provide vital canopy cover to alleviate the effects of climate change. This green infrastructure will also play a crucial role in absorbing rainfall and mitigating surface water flooding, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable urban environment.

It will also help to support sustainable pollinator populations and make the area more attractive for people to live and work in. Trees planted in the plant beds include; Crab Apple, Amelanchier, Hazel and Magnolia, Native Foxglove, Pulmonaria, Alliums and Snowdrops.

Kate Poulter, Chief Executive of WeAreWaterloo BID, said: ‘This transformative project is a shining example of what can be achieved through the power of partnership. It’s been wonderful to watch new trees and hundreds of plants being planted over recent weeks in the final stages of completion, and we’re incredibly proud to see the impact the green spaces are already having on our local businesses, workers and residents.’

The project was co-funded by a combination of support from Lambeth Council, WeAreWaterloo and SoWN, using a mixture of revenue funding: Lambeth’s Capital Investment Programme and Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy. Additional funding was secured from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund and the Cross River Partnership’s Healthy Streets Everyday (HSE II) programme.
