Funding Secured for Green Energy Feasibility Study

News   |   Dec 2024

We are thrilled to share that the South Bank and Waterloo Sustains Us partnership has been awarded £130,000 in funding from the Government’s Heat Network Delivery Unit. This funding will support a feasibility study into the potential for building a heat network in our area, which would be a major step towards creating a fairer and greener South Bank and Waterloo.

The funding bid, submitted by Lambeth Council on behalf of the partnership, will explore the best location for a heat network, assess its viability, and determine how it could benefit the community by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, attracting investment, and creating a more sustainable energy system.

What is a Heat Network?

A heat network is an energy system that distributes heat from a central source to multiple buildings through underground pipes. It’s a low-carbon alternative to traditional heating systems, like gas boilers, and is particularly effective in densely populated areas. Heat networks can help us move away from fossil fuels and support our shift to more sustainable energy sources.

If implemented, a heat network in South Bank and Waterloo could bring a host of benefits, including:

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions – helping tackle climate change.
  • Significant investment in the local economy.
  • Resilient and efficient heating for homes and businesses.
  • Long-term savings on heating costs for residents and businesses.

This feasibility study marks an exciting milestone as we work towards delivering large-scale projects that benefit everyone in our community.
