
Building a Greener Future: LSBU’s Green Skills Hub
London South Bank University’s Green Skills Hub, in partnership with Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark councils, has created a virtual work experience programme and green sectors showcase for residents aged 16 and above.
The LSBU Green Skills Hub collaborated with the councils and Springpod to develop this virtual work experience initiative, offering participants an immersive journey into sustainable careers. Through the programme, participants tackle real-world challenges, learn from industry leaders, and develop skills that contribute to a greener future.
Programme Highlights
- Immersive Learning – Gain in-depth knowledge of sustainability practices through guided tasks that simulate real industry challenges.
- Expert Mentorship – Engage with professionals from LSBU and the Green Skills Hub to gain insights into the latest green innovations.
- Career Growth – Build a strong foundation in sustainability to empower future career prospects in the green economy.
- Inspiring Webinars – Learn from industry leaders in webinars covering key topics such as renewable energy, green technologies, and sustainable business practices.
Key Focus Areas
After an extensive introduction to key concepts, including climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and net zero, the programme explores five core areas:
- Retrofitting and reducing energy demand in buildings
- Low-carbon heat and energy
- Green new construction and a sustainable construction industry practices
- Green infrastructure
- Building a green economy
Results
While the programme is still ongoing, engagement has been strong between October 2023 and December 2024.
So far, 738 young people have completed the programme, with each participant spending an average of six hours engaging with the platform.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive with 87% of people feeling fairly or very confident about using their careers to support climate action, and 90% gaining a greater understanding of the diversity and number of roles available within net zero careers.
